Vision and Objectives

Create a vibrant and active waterfront linked to the city through high-quality public realm and active ground floor uses, where views to and from the water are celebrated and prioritised.

1. Open up the full extent of the waterfront for public activity.

2. Create a sequence of spaces and streets that orientate and connect to the water.

3. Ensure the correct positioning and orientation of buildings to enhance views and connections.

4. Curate an iconic skyline to sign post ocean village from surrounding areas.

5. Consider active uses at the top of taller buildings to provide opportunities for a wide audience to enjoy the water views.

Enhance the Ocean Village Quarter neighbourhood by positively integrating new homes and facilities with the existing residential community, strengthening local services and quality of life.

1. Maximise opportunity sites to provide well designed, high density housing.

2. Create a mix of housing types, sizes and tenures to encourage a mixed residential community.

3. Provide a range of community facilities that ensure the needs of the community are met within the village.

Introduce a connected network of green spaces, including a new “Ocean Village Green” and greening across the streetscape to support well-being, biodiversity, and community life.

1. Create a series of public spaces that become a focus for local people and visitors alike.

2. Enable street greening to enhance the environment.

3. Create opportunity for rooftop and community gardens for the resident community.

Establish Ocean Village as an iconic destination by celebrating its heritage, introducing new attractions and carefully designing tall buildings to form important city centre land marks. 

1. Create a skyline that provides a recognisable landmark for Southampton.

2. Ensure tall buildings are of the highest quality.

3. Ensure a palette of materials that is robust and built to last.

4. Encourage the best architectural outcomes.

5. Consider opportunities to draw people into the Village - including reimagining the Solent Sky museum, encouraging more hotel, hospitality, food and beverage opportunities and consider adjacencies such as the National Oceanography Centre and Itchen Riverside.

Strengthen the role of Ocean Village as an employment hub with high-quality office and innovation space, supporting both current businesses and new jobs.

1. Integrate existing employment.

2. Create new opportunities of collaboration and partnerships.

3. Linkage with Oceanography Centre.

4. Strengthen the hospitality and F&B offer.

Improve connections to the rest of the city while creating a pedestrian-friendly environment, consolidating car parking, and opening up links to Itchen Riverside and Mayflower Waterfront.

1. Align with the wider city and regional opportunities for mass rapid transit, including bus prioritisation and potential for water taxis.

2. Work to keep car access and car parking to the edge of the site, making the most of the existing multi-storey car park.

3. Consider potential to make Ocean Way more pedestrian orientated.
